Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter
Activision Jedi Starfighter is the latest in that much abused of gaming genres, the Star Wars game. Included in the few gems was Jedi's prequel, Star Wars: Starfighter, a cockpit-view shooter that stood out among early PS2 titles. Jedi serves more as an extra set of missions than a full-blown follow-up, but there are some new features and the gameplay feels a lot smoother. The finest of these new additions are the Force weapons; when playing as the Starfighter itself, you're able to utilise the Force to unleash mass devastation on your foes. The 15 missions alternate between control of this craft and a more robust ship well stocked with missiles; despite being based around a basic protect-and-shoot premise, the missions are nicely varied in style.

The controls are baffling at first but you'll soon be pulling off some outrageous manoeuvres as you hunt down the enemy ships while issuing commands to your comrades. The graphics in these dogfights are fantastic, especially when using the zoom option, but larger ships tend to explode in a less than convincing fashion. The lack of recognisable characters, bar an appearance from Mace Windu and a Yoda voiceover, does detract, as does the lack of the classic Star Wars ships (the game is based indirectly on Episode 2). This is partially made up for by an unlockable Tie Fighter along with some new missions and some truly bizarre bonus material. While being a bit too similar to the previous game to warrant buying both, Jedi Starfighter is a very accomplished title that only suffers slightly from its repetitive nature.—Jonathan Winter
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Activision Sam and Max Hit the Road lets players guide Sam (a detective dog) and Max (his rabbit sidekick) through a series of twisted adventures. Don't let the talking-animal theme fool you—this is a cartoon for adults with plenty of over-the-top humour and some tricky puzzles.
Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance
Activision Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance casts you as the youngest son of the Azzameen family, a merchant dynasty operating in a galaxy far, far away. The game is set in the turbulent time period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Caught amid increasing tensions between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, with business rivals watching for any sign of weakness, the Azzameens are on the edge of financial ruin. Worse, their Rebel sympathies may endanger their very survival.

As the family's newest pilot, you fly tutorial missions at first, under the supervision of your sister Aeron and the droid Emkay. But even as you are training, the situation heats up. Before long, the family has been betrayed, your space station has been seized and you're forced to turn to the Rebellion. Though the game's focus is on combat, the development of this story is tight and suspenseful.

The story and the merchant/smuggler setting give the game plenty of variety. One mission may have you piloting a loaded freighter through an Imperial blockade, while another may place you in the cockpit of an X-Wing on a hit-and-run raid against an enemy battle station. Every ship, every weapon, every sound effect is pure Star Wars, totally faithful to the look—and feel—of the films. This extends to the missions themselves: nothing works as planned, but somehow you and your Rebel allies manage to make it all the way to the climactic Battle of Endor. If you've distinguished yourself in the earlier missions, hot pilots will get the chance to take the controls of the Millennium Falcon and cram a torpedo into the gut of the Emperor's second Death Star.

Controlling the fighters, freighters, and transports in X-Wing Alliance is easy, with all the options you'd expect in a Star Wars simulation. Shield, engine, and weapon power levels are all adjustable, so you, too, can transfer all power to front deflector screens while attacking, or shut down power to weapons to outrun a swarm of TIE fighters. Novice players may find it difficult to control wingmen or to keep track of the changing objectives when missions go sour. But practice makes perfect, and the truly frustrated can simply skip up to three missions without penalty.

With a modest learning curve and graphics that put you right in the milieu of the Star Wars films, X-Wing Alliance will have you flying combat missions for the Rebel Alliance in no time—and loving every minute of it. —Alyx Dellamonica

Commandos Behind Enemy Lines
Eidos Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines places you in the command of one to six soldiers (known as, naturally, the commandos), all with their own sets of skills, strengths and weaknesses. The game throws a monkey wrench into standard real-time strategy conventions by eschewing such typical features as resource accumulation and unit creation. Pyro Studios and Eidos Interactive, in changing the way real-time strategy games are played, have moulded Commandos: BEL into a far more tactical and strategic game than its competitors in the genre.

Featuring 24 World War II-based missions, which take place in a variety of locations—including deserts, dams and snow-covered terrain—Commandos: BEL offers a wide variety of mission objectives, with game play emphasising the dynamics between the six commandos. For instance, Tread's skills lie in driving, Spooky carries disguises and spy equipment for infiltration missions, and Fins works best in the comfort of water.

Stealth techniques dominate most missions; a handy line-of-sight display confirms whether your commandos are hidden from view. In some missions, alerting enemy guards could prove costly. In others, though, offensive tactics provide the greatest—and easiest—success. The diverse strategies employed in Commandos: BEL create a unique and rewarding gaming experience. —Doug Radcliffe

Star Wars: X-Wing Collector Series
Lucas Arts Star Wars fans, listen up. If you missed out on LucasArts's X-Wing or TIE Fighter simulations when they first appeared, it's time to make amends. These classic games from the days of DOS have been given a complete makeover, updated with enhanced graphics, and now run under Windows 95 and 98. X-Wing Collector Series contains both of these Collector editions in a single box, along with a demo CD-ROM containing X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter: Flight School, and offers them all at a price that should be well within anyone's entertainment budget.

Entertained is what you will be once you've installed these games. X-Wing lets players pilot A-wings, Y-wings, B-wings and (of course) X-wings in dozens of missions against the evil Empire. Although Rebel ships have the advantage of being equipped with shields, don't expect any mercy—the game is infamous for containing some of the toughest missions of all time.

TIE Fighter turns the tables by letting players work their way up in the Imperial ranks. Several types of TIE ships are modelled, from the ungainly TIE bomber to the incredibly agile TIE defender. In both games the controls are about as perfect as they can get in a game of this type, and campaign missions play out with convincing voice acting and great plot twists. The graphics pale in comparison to a newer game like X-Wing: Alliance, but there is so much gameplay in these CD-ROMs that we barely had time to notice. —T. Byrl Baker
